The capital city’s favourite park, Garden of Five Senses, is due for a facelift! According to the Delhi government, this green space near Saket is planned to undergo a major renovation to transform it into a vibrant recreational hub. With plans to incorporate several developments, they include- an ayurvedic wellness spa, rock climbing walls, paintball arena, library cafes and craft cafes showcasing local artsmanship.
What do we know so far about the Garden of Five Senses redevelopment project?
The Delhi Tourism Department has issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) to engage a consultant to draw park plans and offer strategic guidance. Acording to an official, “The idea is to redevelop the park in a way that irrespective of whether you are a nature lover, fitness enthusiast, art admirer, someone looking for the perfect photo-op or someone who just wants to take a break and listen to the music from the singing trees from Bastar or the music pillars from Southern India, you can find it here.”
A comprehensive redevelopment calls for a landscape redesign that involves responsibility over all the nitty details. That entails both open and covered areas, along with elements such as signage, art installations, seating and furniture, shelters, parking facilities, boundary walls, entry and exit gates, tourist activities, and facilities for rainwater harvesting.
The redevelopment of the park was proposed once before, but fell through as the forest department did not grant clearance. Therefore, this time the consultant has been further instructed to craft a plan that takes into consideration the abundance of nature, making sure that their suggestions do not harm the environment. “The aim is to upgrade the park and beautify it, offering a variety of activities, keeping in mind eco sustainability,” states an official.
