Delhi weather update: An intense heatwave shows no sign of reducing as the India Meteorological Department forecasts the temperature to climb further past 45 degrees Celsius in Delhi. The department has therefore issued a yellow alert as ‘hot and humid’ conditions persist across the city. According to Senior IMD scientist, Krishna Mishra, ‘The condition is likely to continue till June 12.’
The IMD weather bulletin further reads that, “These temperatures are expected to rise by 3°C in the next three days and reach 44°C. Due to this, hot and humid days are likely to continue till June 12.’ The temperature is predicted to be similar across all the northern and northwest states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and western Uttar Pradesh.
Updated weather predictions for this week in Delhi
Clear skies and dry air are expected to persist in the coming days. This intense heat is likely to be experienced between June 9 and June 12. However, the city can expect little relief from the intense weather by the end of this week. Conditions are set to soften courtesy of light rains and thunderstorms. Here is a more detailed weather prediction as stated by the IMD:
June 10: Clear skies and dusty winds with temperatures rising to 44 degrees Celsius (yellow alert issued).
June 11: Strong winds with temperature rising to a maximum of 44 degrees Celsius (yellow alert issued for extreme hot and humid conditions).
June 12: Clear skies with temperatures rising to a maximum of 43 degrees Celsius as hot and humid conditions continue.
June 13: Partly cloudy as light rain and thunderstorms are predicted. The temperature is set to range between 41-43 degrees Celsius.
June 14: Gusty winds with thunderstorms and lightning as a partly cloudy sky brings the temperature to a maximum of 41 degrees Celsius.
June 15: Rain and thunderstorms are expected this Sunday as maximum temperatures rise to 38 degrees Celsius.
Precautionary measures for Delhi weather
Given the extreme weather conditions, it is advised to minimise physical activity and remain indoors. Always carry a water bottle with you at all times, as it is crucial to remain hydrated. Further, bring an umbrella with you while travelling to avoid staying too long under direct sunlight.
