While Delhi is currently burning in the summer heat, it also has one of the highest levels of green cover among major Indian cities. According to the latest Indian State of Forest Report by the Forest Survey of India, the city’s green cover spans 371.3 sq km out of its 1483 sq km area. As a result, the forest area is a playground for the city’s bird enthusiasts. The Delhi Zoo or National Zoological Park is a sanctuary for India’s thriving flora and fauna. Now, it has launched a weekly ‘Sunday Bird Walk‘ initiative, and it’s free to attend. Whether you are a beginner birdwatcher, a seasoned birder, or simply looking for family time among the gems of nature, the initiative takes you on a guided walk with expert ornithologists all year long. Slots are limited, and here’s how to register yours.
Delhi Zoo Launches Sunday Bird Walk
The National Zoological Park is one of the largest and most prominent wildlife parks in the country. Spanning an area of 176 acres near India Gate, it attracts over a million visitors annually. Moreover, it is home to over 1,350 animals and birds, including the Asiatic lion, white tigers, and bird species like macaws, hornbills, peafowls, and more. On June 15, 2026, the Delhi Zoo launched a weekly ‘ Sunday Bird Walk’ initiative, inviting the public to watch birds, observe avian diversity, and learn scientific methods for identifying and recording bird behaviour and sightings. Beyond participating in biodiversity conservation, it also gives a chance for people to catch cute and colourful birdies in action.
What can you expect?
As part of the inaugural walk, ornithologist Dr Partithosh Ahmad guided 23 participants, including students, birdwatchers, families, and wildlife enthusiasts. During the walk, the participants also documented 33 bird species along with sightings of over 100 birds. The bird walk is set to take place every Sunday from 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM under the guidance of a seasoned ornithologist and a team of birding volunteers. You can expect to catch Indian Peafowl, Asian koel, Rosed-ringed Parakeet, Painted Stork, Indian Cormorant, and White-throated Kingfisher, among others. Additionally, you can explore forests, wetlands, and grasslands, along with learning birdwatching tips.
How to book your slot?
Be sure to carry binoculars, a notebook to record your sightings, a camera with a zoom lens (if available), a water bottle, and comfortable walking shoes. Moreover, do remember to carry your cellphones for e-bird entry, but put them on silent for an uninterrupted walk. The registrations, however, are limited to 20 participants only on first come and first serve basis. Registrations are open from Monday to Friday, and you can book them through Delhi Zoo’s official website and the NZP Sathi mobile application.
