A distinct buzz is taking over the country’s sports calendar. From being a recreational game to a world-renowned sport, Badminton’s connection to India goes back centuries. Today, sports prodigies like PV Sindhu, Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth, and Lakshya Sen have become household names. Bringing the ultimate tournament of honour, one of the most prestigious badminton championships, returns to the country after seventeen long years. From August 17 to 23 2026, New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium is gearing up to host the 30th edition of BWF’s World Badminton Championship.

Sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the World Badminton Championships stand as the pinnacle of the sport. With each tournament, players compete for gold medals, world ranking points, and ultimate glory. Moreover, New Delhi inherits the mantle directly from Paris, France, which successfully delivered a masterclass in high-stakes sports entertainment during the 2025 edition at the Adidas Arena. It is India’s second time hosting the championships, with the previous edition held at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad. In fact, the showpiece is returning to Asia after eight years.

Over seven days, the tournament unfolds across five distinct categories – Men’s and women’s singles, and Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed doubles. Additionally, the year’s grid is stacked with approximately 379 athletes representing over 50 countries arriving in the capital for a single-elimination knockout format. The schedule kicks off on August 17 with early qualification rounds, followed by quarter-finals on August 21, semifinals on August 22, and the finals on August 23, 2026. The grand finale concludes with the medal ceremony, with all five world titles decided back to back.
Players to watch out for
The draw sizes feature 64 players in the singles category and 48 pairs across doubles. The stellar Indian contingent has a deafening home-ground advantage. The biggest spotlight shines on the men’s doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. The Sat-Chirag pair is backed by a bronze medal finish at the 2025 championships and is a favourite to win. Furthermore, leading the singles is the legendary PV Sindhu along with the rising stars Olympic semifinalist Lakshya Sen, rising star Ayush Shetty, and teenage prodigy Unnati Hooda.
Nevertheless, one cannot miss the reigning world champions from the former edition. Looking to recreate his dominant championship run in Men’s Singles is China’s Shi Yuqi. He faces stiff resistance from 2025 runner-up Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn.
Moreover, the defending champion, Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, returns in Women’s Singles along with South Korea’s Olympic champion, An Se-young. Watch out for South Korean duo Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae in men’s doubles and China’s titans Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning.
